Using liquid crystal shutters and compressed air, like on the MV48 one, would make 70mm vastly superior to any digital format on the horizon. A lot of the problems with film are related to frame shaking in mechanical shutters... during capture, scanning or opticals (rare, now), and projection. I still think camera size and distribution costs have a lot more to do with the change to digital, not so much 4k being better than your average 35mm presentation run by teenagers at the local cineplex. Imax Digital and Imax 3D (also digital) are pretty appalling at their pixel size, in my opinion. You have to sit far back with some of these 2k projectors to not see the squares and the slight space between them.

4th generation 35mm release prints were surpassed by 2K digital projection(The Phantom Menace in 1999).
4th generation(and rare) 70mm prints have been surpassed by 4K digital projection(witness Lawrence Of Arabia in 2012).
In a side by side comparison between 70mm/15 perf IMAX and a Barco 4k Digital projector in early 2011 the test audience voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Barco 4K.

Film is dead.
It had it's time.

So why can't they use the film IMAX camera's anymore in the future? It just won't be screened in 70mm anymore (damn shame) but why do they have to disappear? It seems as if they disappear as well in this article.

I recently saw oblivion on IMAX and thought the image quality was nearly good enough for a 1.44:1 crop. I believe that was shot on the Sony F65 CineAlta.

Yes. I agree. It's all about money. These studio people are clearly taking advantage of the audience; squeezing them for everything they have while retaining every penny they have. It's despicable. Thank goodness for people like Nolan, who are really just working hard to give audiences the best experience possible.

They did the opposite with Star Trek for me. Theater has 15/70 but used digital for it. The studios don't want to front the cost to make the 15/70 prints but they don't mind taking extra money from viewers. That is becoming a big problem.

Teddy, does it really matter how many IMAX film projectors there will be left? For TDKR my theater was digital, but they brought in the film projector especially for TDKR. For Interstellar they may do the same thing; they'll just bring in the film projections.
